Ever wondered how to behave like a true Malaysian? You have come to the right place! This post is specially catered to the wanderlust who wanted to feel like they belong in one’s country.
Feast your knowledge as we will provide you some quirky facts and slangs in Malaysia, so you may practice it along the way and become one of us in no time!
We Are All Multilingual.
Have you ever been fascinated by the harmony of the Malaysians? Especially when you’re in Mamak (Restaurant) and you wanted to take away some meal, all you need to say is “Anney! (the meal you wish to order) tapau satu!”
- Anney (Indian) – Brother
- Tapau (Chinese) – Take Away
- Satu (Malay) – One.
Congratulations! You have mastered the art of speaking multilingual in one sentences.
Everyone is BOSS.
Wherever Malaysian went to certain hawkers or restaurants, it is deemed as normal when they call each other the word “Boss”. Whether to order some dish, or taking order from customer.
We Treat Each Other Like Family
Malaysians tend to familiarize random strangers as someone close by calling them as “aunty”, “uncle”, “bro”, “sis”. Not because we know them personally, but solely because the respect within each other is strong with this one.
Never Mess With Our Food
True enough, Malaysians tend to be very passionate and obsessed about our food. What can I say? We had it all here, craving for nasi lemak in the middle of the night? Just head to Kampung Bahru, various types of dish served from scrumptious local to international cuisine, a true food paradise.
Remember the “Rendang Not Crispy Enough” that went viral? That alone shows the unity between Malaysians and its other sibling countries. Although we bicker a lot with other neighboring countries, but when it comes to food and how it should be cooked, we are willing to be the keyboard warrior for our “rendang”!
Upset you’re not invited? Say this!
Apparently there’s a term you could say when your friends are hanging out but didn’t invite you. This word is very powerful as it’s purpose is to deliver the exact message, but in a subtle way so that you wouldn’t guilt trip them. Johoreans, you are correct, the magic word is, “BOJIO!”
End your sentence with -lah, -loh, -wey.
As a true Malaysian, we familiar ourselves with Malaysian English – Manglish. Mainly because we tend to combine more than one language into a sentence. And we love our very own self-made-short forms!
For example : You wanted to say you’re going out. You say, “I want go out lah”
We also end our sentences with these word to emphasize our expression. It is the same thing as Canadians with their – ehs.
There it is fellow adventurer! You have completed the theory of being a true Malaysian! Now go out there and enjoy the soul of Asia while you can.
Malaysia Boleh!
