Kampung Johor Lama is all that remains of the foundations of what is termed the old Johor Kingdom which was ruled under the auspices of the ancient Malacca empire, before becoming a kingdom in its own right after the fall of Malacca.

It was also the site of the Kota Lama Johor, the fort which once guarded the old settlement, though now only archaeological ruins remained to mark the spot.
